An earworm, as you probably know, is a song – or a word/phrase – that gets stuck on repeat in your head. Last night mine was All I Ask of You from Phantom. Which is odd, because if I were to pick a Phantom song it would always be Music of the Night.
It was swiftly followed by Your Latest Trick by Dire Straits, specifically the line ‘Echoes roars dinosaurs, they’re all doing the monster mash’ which is less odd, I suppose, given my name.
The playlist moved on, because I mentioned the musical CATS on Twitter, to The Journey to the Heaviside Layer ‘up up up up to the Heaviside layer’ and then Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat ‘the cat of the railway train’ and I was rapidly losing the will to live.
Earworms drive me batty – is my head not noisy enough without having music stuck in there too? And the best way to get rid of an earworm is to sing it. I can’t sing. Doesn’t stop me trying, mind you, so my house was just as noisy as my head.
